Teaching guide

What children will practise

Put 5-10 word cards in order to make a sentence joined with and, but or because, then copy it onto the line, using the picture to decide which idea comes first.

What's in the worksheet

10 sentences, 2 points each, 20 points in total - Card sets range from 5 cards (item 1: apples / and / bananas / I / like) to 10 cards (item 8) - The sentences are the same ones used on the fill-in sheet for this topic, e.g. Tom wears a coat because it is cold. and The cake looks good, but it tastes too salty. - The cards carry no commas or full stops, so children add the punctuation themselves - The key writes out all 10 sentences with the connector highlighted in red

How to use it in class

Use after the fill-in sheet on and, but and because, since the sentences repeat. Allow about 20 minutes. - Suggest children find the capitalised card first and park the connector in the middle, so they only have two short halves to order - After marking, have children write a new second half, e.g. I want to play, but..., and read it to a partner

Common sticking points

- Item 4 has both She and she, so children may misplace she or capitalise the word after but - Item 8 has We and we plus to and bed, and children often produce We went bed to early - Leaving out the full stop, and the comma before but in items 2, 4 and 7, because neither is on the cards - In items 1, 6 and 9 children may swap the two nouns, e.g. I like juice and milk, which is correct but differs from the key
