Read two-part sentences written in Thai with a picture and choose and, but or because according to how the parts relate: adding, contrasting or giving a reason.

What's in the worksheet

10 items, 2 points each - Every sentence is written in Thai with a gap for an English connector, e.g. ฉันชอบแอปเปิล ___ กล้วย (I like apples ___ bananas) and เค้กดูน่าอร่อย ___ มันเค็มเกินไป (the cake looks tasty ___ it is too salty) - Three answers are and (apples and bananas, a dog and a cat, milk and orange juice), three are but and four are because - Items 2 and 3 both involve rain, but item 2 needs but and item 3 needs because - A separate key writes the connector into each sentence in red

How to use it in class

Use as the first connectors sheet: children reason from Thai, so long English sentences are not yet a barrier. Allow about 10 minutes. - Before starting, put and = และ, but = แต่, because = เพราะ on the board and have each child make one Thai sentence of their own - After marking, have children turn items 1, 2 and 3 into full English sentences, e.g. I want to play, but it is raining.

Common sticking points

- Item 2 (I want to play ___ it is raining): choosing because, since rain triggered because in item 3, though this one needs but - Item 4 (she is tired ___ she finished her homework): choosing because, reasoning that homework made her tired, which is also defensible - Item 6 (I have a dog ___ a cat): choosing but because the two animals are different
