What children will practise

Use the picture to choose and, but or because to join two parts of a sentence, deciding whether the second part adds, contrasts or gives a reason.

What's in the worksheet

10 sentences, 2 points each, 20 points in total - and appears 3 times, joining two things shown with a + sign, e.g. I like apples ___ bananas. and I like milk ___ juice. - but appears 3 times, e.g. I want to play, ___ it is raining. and She is tired, ___ she finishes her homework. - because appears 4 times, e.g. Tom wears a coat ___ it is cold. and He is happy ___ he won the game. - The key redraws each picture and prints the answer in red within the full sentence

How to use it in class

Use once the meaning of all three connectors has been taught. Allow about 10-15 minutes. - Before starting, point out that every sentence with a comma before the gap (items 2, 4 and 7) takes but, and ask children why - After marking, have pairs ask and answer Why? questions, e.g. Why does Tom wear a coat? - Because it is cold., to practise because orally

Common sticking points

- In items 3 and 8 children may write and, reading the two parts as a sequence when the second part is a reason - In item 4, She is tired, ___ she finishes her homework., some children write because without noticing that she carries on despite being tired - Mixing up but and because when two items share a setting, such as items 2 and 3, which both show rain
