Teaching guide

What children will practise

Write a, an or some in each gap without options, deciding from the picture whether it shows one item starting with a consonant or vowel sound, several items, or something uncountable.

What's in the worksheet

10 sentences, 2 points each, 20 points (one part, Part A) - some is the answer 6 times: apples, rice, juice, carrots, milk and cheese - an twice: She has ___ egg. and He has ___ orange. - a twice: I eat ___ banana. and I have ___ cookie. - The key prints each full sentence in red, but lists items 1-5 down the left column and 6-10 down the right, unlike the worksheet's row order

How to use it in class

Use after the multiple-choice sheet on this topic, as this one gives no options. Allow about 10 minutes. - Before starting, recap the an-before-a-vowel-sound rule with the sheet's own words (egg, orange) against banana and cookie - After marking, play a picnic basket chain game: each child says In my basket there is some cheese and an egg... adding one item each time

Common sticking points

- Items 3, 5, 8 and 10 show one bowl of rice, one glass of juice, one bottle of milk and one wedge of cheese, so children may write a because they count the container - In items 2 and 4 children may write a egg or a orange, looking only at the fact that there is one - Item 9 shows a single cookie, but children used to some cookies may write some
