Curriculum indicators practised
Before you begin
Read Kim and Pip, a story built on CVC words such as map, dog, rug, cap and van, then decide whether ten statements are true, spotting swapped words such as cat for dog and sun for star.
A five-sentence story with 10 true/false statements, 20 points - Kim has a small map; Pip is her dog; they sit on a rug at camp; Kim sees a big star; Pip has a cap; at night they nap in the van - Four statements are false: Pip is a cat. / Kim sees a big sun. / They are at school. / Pip has a red hat. - Six are true, e.g. They sit on a rug. and Kim and Pip nap in a van. - A separate answer key is included
Use after the multiple-choice CVC reading sheet, since here children compare each statement with the story word by word. Allow about 15 minutes. - Before starting, have children read the underlined words aloud and point to each in the picture, e.g. rug, cap, van - After marking, ask children to correct each false statement, e.g. Pip is a dog., and read it to a partner
- Item 8, Pip has a red hat.: answering True because a cap is a hat, without noticing the cap is purple - Item 4, Kim sees a big sun.: answering True because big is remembered from the story - Item 7, Kim can see a star.: answering False because the story says big star - Ticking True whenever the names are right, without reading the last word
