Before you begin

Teaching guide

What children will practise

Read short sentences typical of emails and letters and choose the meaning of a key word, such as reply, free, return, explain, include, polite and begins, from three options.

What's in the worksheet

10 questions, 2 points each, 20 points - Each item is a single sentence, e.g. Please reply before Friday. / Please include your name in the email. / The meeting begins at nine. - Options are short English definitions, e.g. costs no money, go back, tell how it works, kind and respectful - In items 3, 8 and 9 the bold word does not match the keyed answer (see teacher notes) - The key rings the answers in yellow: b a c b a c b a c b

How to use it in class

Use after the two email reading sheets on this topic, since several sentences come from those emails. Allow about 10-15 minutes. - Before handing it out, correct the bold word in items 3 (notebook), 8 (visit) and 9 (send), or tell children to define that word instead - After marking, have children use three words from the sheet in an email to a friend, e.g. Please reply before Monday.

Common sticking points

- In item 3 children who follow the instruction look for the meaning of small, find none, and may pick big bag because it is about size - In item 9 the bold word is today, so children cannot find a matching option and may choose read it aloud - Choosing start again in item 4, confusing return with restart - Choosing very old or too big in item 2, not knowing that free here means costs no money
