Teaching guide

What children will practise

Name the food group of familiar foods, as a first step towards grouping food by what it does for the body.

What's in the worksheet

10 questions, 10 points - Write the food group for each picture; there is no word bank - The key uses five groups, two foods each: fruit (apple, banana), rice and starch (rice, bread), protein (grilled fish, boiled egg), milk (milk carton, yoghurt) and vegetables (carrot, broccoli) - The answer key writes each group name in red

How to use it in class

Use after teaching the food groups. Allow about 15 minutes. - Before starting, agree on the group names the class will use and write all five on the board - When using Thailand's five food groups, accept milk and yoghurt in group 1 alongside meat, eggs and beans - After marking, ask children to recall yesterday's lunch and count how many groups it covered

Common sticking points

- Children who know the Thai five food groups often put milk and yoghurt under protein, since milk belongs to group 1 there - Putting bread with milk or snacks, not realising it is made from flour - Writing a group number such as group 1 instead of the group name, which does not match the key
