Before you begin

Teaching guide

What children will practise

Arrange word cards into sentences about future plans using am/is/are going to + verb + a time phrase, guided by a picture.

What's in the worksheet

10 questions, 20 points (2 points each) - Each item has 4-5 word cards, e.g. tomorrow. / I / am going to / ride a bike - Subjects include I, She, We, He, They, Mom, The boy and Dad - Time phrases: tomorrow, on Sunday, after school, tonight, next weekend, for dinner, later and on Saturday - The answer key gives full sentences, e.g. She is going to visit Grandma on Sunday. and Dad is going to wash the car on Saturday.

How to use it in class

Use after teaching be going to and choosing am, is or are for the subject. Allow about 15-20 minutes. - Children who still struggle with word order can cut up a spare copy and arrange the cards on the desk before writing - Follow up orally: each child tells a partner two weekend plans, such as I am going to... on Saturday.

Common sticking points

- Children often put the time phrase first or in the middle, e.g. I tomorrow am going to ride a bike., even though the card with the full stop shows where it belongs - In item 2 both She and Grandma start with a capital letter, so a child may build Grandma is going to visit She on Sunday. - Children often forget the base verb after going to, or add -ing as in going to riding - In items 6 and 10 the subject is a noun (Mom, Dad), and children may hesitate over using is
