Before you begin

Teaching guide

What children will practise

Order word cards into sentences that state a number, There are ... and There is one ..., to match the pictures.

What's in the worksheet

10 items, 20 points - Four or five word cards per item, with numbers as words from two to ten, e.g. There are three balloons., There are four fish., There are seven butterflies. - Item 6, There is one treasure chest., is the only sentence with is - Item 9 has five cards, and toy must go before boats: There are nine toy boats. - A separate key writes each full sentence with a tick

How to use it in class

Use after the circle-the-number and fill-in sheets, once children can say There are .... Allow about 15 minutes. - Before starting, have children count every picture by touching each object, then check it against the number word on the card - In items 9 and 10, the pictures show 10 boats and 11 keys while the cards and key use nine and ten. Mark sentence order separately from counting, or accept the number a child counts from the picture with an explanation - After marking, pairs ask How many frogs are there? and answer with the sentence they wrote

Common sticking points

- Writing There are one treasure chest. in item 6, or misplacing is, after nine items with are - Putting toy after the noun in item 9: There are nine boats toy. - Placing the card with the full stop (e.g. balloons.) mid-sentence instead of noticing it must come last - In items 9 and 10, counting 10 boats and 11 keys, which does not match the cards nine and ten
