Before you begin
Count 1-10 pictured objects and circle the right number from three, as groundwork for answering How many ...? questions.
10 items, 20 points - Objects to count: balloons, apples, kites, books, pencils, fish, cookies, stars, a robot and cars - Totals run from 1 (a single robot) to 10 (cars in two rows of five) - The three options are neighbouring numbers, e.g. 3/4/5, 7/5/6, 8/10/9, and are not in order - A separate key circles the answer in green with a tick
Use at the start of the How many unit, before the fill-in and sentence-building sheets. Allow about 10 minutes. - Have children count aloud in English, touching or lightly ticking each object so none is counted twice - After marking, point to a row and ask How many apples?; accept Seven. first, then build it up to There are seven apples.
- Item 10 has two rows of cars; children who count only the top row may grab 8 or 9 from the options - Items 2 and 8 are long, tightly packed rows, so children are often one out, and the options sit right next to the answer - Item 8 shows 8 stars, but the key circles 9; children who answer 8 should get the mark - Item 6 shows three different kinds of fish, and some children hesitate over whether to count them together
