Teaching guide

What children will practise

Order four word cards into a polite instruction that starts with the verb and ends with please, e.g. Open the window now please.

What's in the worksheet

10 items, 20 points - Order four word cards and write the instruction on the line, 10 items - Eight follow verb + rest + now + please., e.g. Sit down now please., Close the door now please. and Draw a star now please. - Two have no now: Raise your hand please. and Drink some water please. - Item 10, Open the window, does not appear on the other sheets in this set - A separate key ticks the starting verb card and writes the full sentence

How to use it in class

Use as the last sheet in the imperatives set, after the circle and gap-fill sheets. Allow about 15 minutes. - Before starting, explain that an instruction begins with the verb, which has the capital letter, and have children find that card first each time - After marking, practise saying instructions bluntly and politely, Sit down. / Sit down, please., and talk about how the tone changes

Common sticking points

- Putting the card that ends in a full stop (your book., down.) at the end and placing now please. before it, e.g. Open now please your book. - Starting with please, the way Thai puts กรุณา first - Item 4: leaving out the some card and writing Drink water please. - Copying every full stop from the cards, so the sentence ends up with two
