Teaching guide

What children will practise

Choose the verb that starts each instruction from three words and write it in the gap, e.g. ____ your hand. / ____ the door., using the picture and its arrow.

What's in the worksheet

10 items, 20 points - Choose from three words and write it in the gap at the start of each instruction - Answers: Open your book., Sit down., Be quiet., Drink water., Raise your hand., Close your book., Stand up., Draw a star., Read your book. and Close the door. - Items 1, 6 and 9 are all ____ your book., so the picture and arrow decide between Open, Close and Read - A separate key writes each answer and ticks the option

How to use it in class

Use after the sheet where children circle whole instructions, since here they write the verb themselves. Allow about 10-15 minutes. - Before starting, point out the arrows in items 1, 6 and 7 and show how up or down gives the answer away - In item 3, accept both Be quiet. and Stay quiet. In item 10, accept Open or Close when a child explains the ambiguous door picture - After marking, pairs play a cue game: one says only the verb, e.g. Raise!, the other says the whole instruction and does it

Common sticking points

- Swapping Open (item 1) and Close (item 6) by ignoring the up and down arrows on the book - Item 9: choosing Open because the book is open, instead of seeing that the boy is reading - Item 10: the arrow on the door does not clearly show opening or closing, so some choose Open - Item 3: choosing Stay, which also makes a correct sentence (Stay quiet.), though the key wants Be
