Before you begin
Read Mia's Visit to the Library and decide whether ten statements about the QUIET, EXIT and SCHOOL ZONE signs and crossing the road are true or false.
10 statements, 20 points - A six-line story: Mia visits the library after school, sees a QUIET sign so she whispers, an EXIT sign is near the door, she walks rather than runs, her brother waits outside in the SCHOOL ZONE, and they stop and look both ways before crossing - Circle True or False for statements such as Mia shouts in the library., The SCHOOL ZONE is inside the library. and They cross the road without stopping. - Six are true (1, 3, 5, 7, 8, 10) and four false (2, 4, 6, 9) - A Let's reflect box is not scored
Use after the Ben and May multiple-choice story, as this one uses the same signs but children must judge each statement. Allow about 15 minutes. - Before starting, warn children that the small pictures may show the wrong thing, so answers must come from the story - After marking, have children correct the four false statements, e.g. Mia whispers in the library. / Mia walks inside the library.
- Item 4 Mia runs inside the library.: answering True because the item picture shows Mia running - Item 2 Mia shouts: answering True because the picture has a speech bubble - Item 9: answering True because the picture puts the SCHOOL ZONE sign next to a bookshelf - Item 6: missing the word without and answering True
