Teaching guide

What children will practise

Read the child's face and body language in each picture and choose I like ... or I don't like ... to match the feeling.

What's in the worksheet

10 items, 20 points - Circle one of two sentences that differ only in like or don't like - Six things appear: ice cream, broccoli, reading, rain, football and cats - Six answers are I like (1, 3, 5, 6, 8, 9) and four I don't like (2, 4, 7, 10) - A separate key ticks and outlines each answer in green

How to use it in class

Use as the first sheet in the like / don't like set, straight after teaching thumbs up and thumbs down. Allow about 5-10 minutes. - Before starting, hold up a food picture with a happy or cross face and have children say I like ... / I don't like ... to match your expression - After marking, children draw a happy or sad face beside each of the six things for their own real feelings and tell a partner

Common sticking points

- Item 10: choosing I like rain. because the child has an umbrella and raincoat, ignoring the frown - Item 4: the boy covers his ears, so some read it as noise rather than disliking rain - Spotting like and circling without noticing don't in front of it - Answering from their own taste, e.g. a child who likes broccoli circles I like broccoli. in item 2 or 7
