Teaching guide

What children will practise

Predict which objects a magnet will attract, using the rule printed on the sheet that things made of iron are usually attracted.

What's in the worksheet

10 questions, 10 points - Each object is shown beside a horseshoe magnet; write attracted or not attracted - Attracted (per the key): a paper clip, a nail, a key, a spoon, a 1-baht coin and a safety pin - Not attracted: a pencil, a plastic bottle cap, an eraser and a leaf - A board in the picture says things made of iron are usually attracted; the answer key writes every answer in red

How to use it in class

Pair with a real test: children predict on the sheet first, then try the magnet on the actual objects. Allow about 20 minutes. - Have all ten objects ready, especially a key, a spoon and a 1-baht coin, because real results may differ from the key - If a brass key or stainless-steel spoon used in class is not attracted, accept the observed result and compare it with the key - After testing, children circle the predictions they got wrong and say aloud that only some metals are attracted

Common sticking points

- Believing every metal is attracted, which the key reinforces by marking both the spoon and the key as attracted - Saying the pencil is attracted because of the metal band holding its eraser - Thinking a magnet can pick up anything light, such as the leaf or the eraser
