Read The Park Team, a story about a park clean-up day, and tell main-idea questions (best title, main idea) apart from detail questions about who, where and how long.

What's in the worksheet

10 questions, 2 points each, 20 points - The story: on Saturday Lina and her friends meet at the park at nine, wear gloves to collect litter, Mr. Arun shows them how to sort paper, plastic and cans, they work for two hours, plant five flowers, and the principal thanks them at lunchtime - Two main-idea questions: item 1 What is the best title? (Cleaning Our Park) and item 10 What is the main idea? (A team made the park better.) - Eight detail questions, including item 9 Which material was NOT named? (glass) - The key lists the answer text only, e.g. at the park, Mr. Arun, two hours

How to use it in class

Use as the first sheet in the main idea and details set. Allow about 15-20 minutes. - Before starting, ask children to read the story and say in one sentence what it is about, before looking at items 1 and 10 - After marking, have children underline the sentence in the story that answers each detail question and label it with the item number

Common sticking points

- Item 9 contains NOT, and children often pick paper or plastic simply because they saw them in the story - Item 4: choosing the principal, who is also in the story, when Mr. Arun taught the sorting - Item 5: choosing five hours, mixing it up with five small flowers - Item 1: picking a title from a remembered word rather than thinking about the whole story
