Before you begin

Teaching guide

What children will practise

Read Tom's Amazing Volcano and use context clues to work out the meaning of ten bold words such as nervous, audience, realistic and impressed.

What's in the worksheet

10 items, 2 points each, 20 points - The story: Tom takes his volcano model to the science fair, feels nervous, carefully pours in red liquid, white foam bursts out, the audience cheers, the judges are impressed by his explanation and he wins a medal - Bold words: nervous, carefully, suddenly, burst out, audience, realistic, eruption, impressed, explanation and practise - Choose the meaning from a-c, e.g. suddenly means every day / very slowly / at once - The key (a b c a b c b a c b) writes each meaning in full

How to use it in class

Use at the end of the main idea and details set, as working out words from context is harder than the first two sheets. Allow about 15-20 minutes. - Before starting, cover the options and have children read each bold-word sentence and guess the meaning in Thai first, then compare with the choices - After marking, children choose three words and write a sentence about themselves, e.g. I feel nervous before a test.

Common sticking points

- Item 1 nervous: choosing noisy because they start with a similar sound - Item 2 carefully: choosing very quickly, thinking of a rushed experiment - Item 9 explanation: choosing a kind of medal because the next sentence mentions the medal - Item 10: children who only know the US spelling practice may think practise is a mistake
