Before you begin

Teaching guide

What children will practise

Order four to six word cards into a sentence with should, must or have to, placing the modal after the subject and before the main verb, e.g. You should go to bed early.

What's in the worksheet

10 items, 2 points each, 20 points - Order the cards and write the sentence on the line; the situations match the choose and fill sheets on this topic - The modal is already on a card: must in four items (1, 3, 4, 9), should in five (2, 6, 7, 8, 10), and have and to as two separate cards in item 5 - Some sentences are shorter than on the other sheets, e.g. We should recycle bottles. and You should visit a dentist. - Item 4 has six cards: You must stop at the red light.

How to use it in class

Use as the last sheet in the modals set, as children must know the order subject + modal + verb + rest. Allow about 15 minutes. - Before starting, write the frame Who? + should/must/have to + do what? on the board and have children find the capitalised subject card first - After marking, pairs role-play: one states a problem such as I'm tired., the other gives advice with You should ...

Common sticking points

- Item 5: ordering I to have tidy my room., or putting to after tidy, because have and to are separate cards - Item 10: with both to and go available, writing You should to go bed early. - Putting the modal first as in a question, e.g. Must you wear a helmet. - Item 4: writing the light red, following Thai word order
