Teaching guide

What children will practise

Look at safety and good-manners situations and choose should, must or have to, depending on whether the sentence is advice or a rule.

What's in the worksheet

10 items, 2 points each, 20 points - Circle one of the same three options every time (should, must, have to), in shuffled order - Sentences include You ___ wear a helmet., You ___ stop at the red light., I ___ tidy my room today. and You ___ visit the dentist twice a year. - The key has must four times (1, 3, 4, 9), should five times (2, 6, 7, 8, 10) and have to once (5, I have to tidy my room today.) - A separate key writes each sentence in full

How to use it in class

Use as the first sheet in the modals set, after teaching the difference between a rule and advice. Allow about 10-15 minutes. - Before starting, draw a two-column chart, Rule (must / have to) and Advice (should), and have the class sort the sheet's situations into it - Agree beforehand how to mark items where must and have to are both acceptable (see the note)

Common sticking points

- Items 1, 3, 4 and 9: choosing have to instead of must, which is grammatical but marked wrong by the key - Item 5: choosing must instead of have to, though the meaning is very close - Item 8, the dentist twice a year: children often choose must, seeing it as a rule - Item 2, the umbrella in the rain: choosing must because it feels like something you always do
