Teaching guide

What children will practise

Write should, must or have to in each gap with no options printed in the item, then copy the full sentence on the line below, to state everyday rules and advice.

What's in the worksheet

10 items, 2 points each, 20 points - The same ten sentences as the choose sheet on this topic, e.g. You ___ wear a helmet., We ___ put bottles in the recycle bin. and Passengers ___ wear seat belts. - Each item has a gap in the sentence plus a blank line beneath it - Key: must (1, 3, 4, 9), should (2, 6, 7, 8, 10) and have to (5) - A separate key writes each sentence in full

How to use it in class

Use after the choose sheet on the same topic: the sentences are the same but no options are given. Allow about 15 minutes. - Keep should / must / have to on the board throughout and explain that the line under each item is for the whole sentence - After marking, children write two class rules with must and one piece of advice with should

Common sticking points

- Writing musts or has to by mixing up verb forms, even though no third-person singular subject appears here - Items 1, 3, 4 and 9: writing have to instead of must, which is grammatical but does not match the key - Writing must to or should to by analogy with have to - Not knowing what goes on the line under each sentence, so leaving it blank or repeating one word
