Before you begin
Revise numbers to 100 (missing numbers, one before and one after, comparing with > < =, tens and ones), then practise adding and subtracting within 100 through shop, balloon and change stories.
20 slides, each with questions to answer - Slides 2-6, number sense: fill the gaps in 21 22 ? 24 25 and 90 ? 92 93, the numbers before and after 36, 58, 72, 19 and 84, > < = with 45 and 54, 46 and 64, 90 and 89, split 37, 24, 58, 61 and 43 into tens and ones, read tens rods and unit cubes - Slides 7-10, addition: a fruit stall (12 + 6, 9 + 8), adding machines from 23 + 5 to 18 + 9, matching sums, and a maze along the sums that make 20 (with near misses such as 16 + 5, 4 + 15, 3 + 18) - Slides 11-16, subtraction and stories: a cake shop (18 cookies, 5 sold), subtracting machines from 23 - 5 to 18 - 9, how many balloons flew away (25, 17 left), choosing + or - for a story, totalling two items and change from 50 baht - Slides 17-20: a four-digit code, six spot-the-mistake sums (such as 41 - 9 = 34 and 30 - 8 = 21), a four-part boss round and three bonus questions - There are no answer slides
Use as a revision set at the start of the unit or before a test on adding and subtracting within 100, over two lessons of about 30-40 minutes (slides 1-10 and 11-20). - Have children write answers on mini whiteboards and hold them up together; slides 4 and 6 quickly show who still swaps tens and ones - On slide 14 ask whether each story makes the amount go up or down before choosing the sign, then set the mixed addition and subtraction worksheet or the comparing numbers 0-100 worksheet
- Calling 45 and 54, or 46 and 64, equal because the digits are the same, without checking which is in the tens place - Regrouping errors in subtraction, the very ones shown on slide 18: 41 - 9 = 34 and 30 - 8 = 21 - In the maze, stepping on sums that make 19 or 21 (4 + 15, 16 + 5, 3 + 18) by rushing - In the balloon question, adding 25 + 17 because two numbers are shown, instead of finding how many flew away
