Curriculum indicators practised
Before you begin
Recognise 2D shapes (circle, triangle, square, rectangle) and 3D shapes (sphere, cube, cylinder, cone) in everyday objects, count sides and corners, continue patterns, and notice which solids roll and which stack.
20 slides - Slides 2-10, 2D shapes: find the circles in a town, choose the pictures with triangles (tent, pizza, flag, ice cream, window, plate), yes or no to squares across eight pictures (tile, dice, door, clock), sort objects into square and rectangle houses, fill in sides and corners, match shapes to names, four odd-one-out rows, count the shapes in a house, a car and a robot, and four pattern trains - Slides 11-18, 3D shapes: sphere, cube, cylinder and cone with examples, sort objects into sphere or cube, a cylinder factory (can, mug, candle), spot the cones at a party, rolls, stacks or both, a shape market, count the solids in a castle, and a builders' true or false round such as a football is a cube - Slides 19-20: a four-part final round and three bonus questions (football, can, ice-cream cone) - There are no answer slides
Use at the start of a Year 1-2 geometry unit over two lessons of about 30 minutes: 2D shapes on slides 1-10, then solids on slides 11-20. - Keep real objects on your desk (a can, a ball, a dice, a party hat); at slide 15 let children try rolling and stacking them before they answer - After the second lesson, set the 3D shapes worksheet that matches solids to objects to see who still mixes up the names
- Calling a ball a circle or a dice a square, using the 2D name for a solid (slide 18 includes a football is a cube to catch out) - Deciding square or rectangle by size rather than by whether the sides are equal - Choosing every picture on slide 3, including the plate and window, as a triangle - Thinking a cylinder only rolls, when it also stacks on its flat ends (slide 15)
