Before you begin
Learn five more Thai final-consonant groups, kong (ง), kon (น ญ ณ ร ล ฬ), kom (ม), koei (ย) and keo (ว), and listen to the end sound and look at the final letter to sort words into the right group.
20 slides told as a detective taking words home to five houses - Slides 1-3: the mission, a village map and the five houses (listen to the end sound to find the house) - Slides 4-8, one house each: kong ลิง ช้าง กุ้ง; kon บ้าน ฝน บอล (different final letters, same น end sound); kom นม ส้ม ลม; koei กล้วย คอย สวย; keo แมว ดาว แก้ว - Slide 9: a worked example sending ลิง, บ้าน, ส้ม, กล้วย and ดาว to their houses - Slides 10-15: missions 1-6, choosing from five groups for ลิง, บ้าน, ส้ม, กล้วย, ดาว and บอล - Slides 16-19: drag ten words home, which word is in the same group as แมว (ดาว, ส้ม, ฝน), which word is not kong (ลิง, กุ้ง, ช้าง, บ้าน), and a five-word final round (ลิง, ฝน, นม, กล้วย, แมว) - Slide 20: mission complete - There are no answer slides
Use after Word Detective Part 1 (kok, kot, kop) in Year 1, over one or two lessons of about 30 minutes. - On slides 4-8 have children read each example aloud together and stretch the final sound, as in ลิง or แมว, before you point to the final letter; pause on slide 5 and ask for other words whose final letter is not น but still sounds like น - Do slide 16 in groups: hand out the ten word cards for groups to stick on five houses drawn on the board
- Misplacing บอล because its final letter is ล, not realising it belongs to kon (slides 5 and 15 explain that ล sounds like น at the end) - When asked which word is not kong, picking by the pictures rather than the end sound (slide 18, the answer is บ้าน) - Confusing koei and keo in words with complex vowels such as กล้วย, สวย and แก้ว, because children cannot yet tell which letter is the final - Mixing up the end sounds of ส้ม and ฝน, since ม and น sound close
