Teaching guide

What children will practise

Read a first sentence that names a person or thing, then choose the object pronoun (him, her, it, us, them or you) that replaces it in the second sentence, from three options.

What's in the worksheet

10 questions, 20 points (2 points each) - Each item is a pair of sentences, e.g. I can see Tom. I can see ___. and The dog is hungry. Give ___ some food. - Answers: him (item 1), her (items 2, 6 and 10), it (items 3 and 7), us (items 4 and 8), them (item 5), you (item 9) - The distractors are the subject and possessive forms of the same pronoun: he/him/his, she/her/hers, we/us/our, they/them/their - A separate answer key writes out each second sentence with the answer in red

How to use it in class

Use as the first sheet of the object pronouns unit, once I-me, he-him and she-her have been set out on the board. Allow about 10-15 minutes. - Before starting, children underline the noun in the first sentence (Tom, Sarah, the dog, Jack and Ben) and decide whether it is a boy, a girl, a thing or more than one person - This sheet is multiple choice; follow it with the fill-in sheet, which uses the same sentences without options

Common sticking points

- Choosing the subject form, as in I can see he. or Please call we., since he and we are options in items 1 and 4 - Picking his in item 1 or their in item 5 because the word starts the same way - Choosing hers instead of her in items 6 and 10 - Choosing its instead of it in items 3 and 7, thinking the added s makes it an object
