What children will practise

Write was or were in each gap to agree with the subject, including noun subjects such as The toys, The children, My brother and The dog, and It for the weather.

What's in the worksheet

10 questions, 20 points (Part A, 2 points each) - Sentences with pictures, e.g. We ___ in Chiang Mai last summer., The toys ___ on the floor. and It ___ rainy yesterday. - Six pronoun subjects (I, They, She, We, You, It) and four noun subjects (The dog, The toys, My brother, The children) - was is the answer five times (items 1, 3, 5, 8, 10) and were five times (items 2, 4, 6, 7, 9) - A separate answer key shows each answer under its picture

How to use it in class

Use after the was/were choose sheet, once pronouns are matched confidently. Allow about 10 minutes. - Before starting, children circle each subject and write the matching pronoun above it, e.g. The toys = they, My brother = he - After marking, use item 4 as a speaking prompt: children say where they went last holiday, We were in ... last summer. It was ...

Common sticking points

- In item 6, You ___ late for class, the picture shows one boy, so children often write was although you takes were - Items 7 (The toys) and 9 (The children) are plural without the word they, so was is a common slip - In item 10, It ___ rainy, a child may write were because the picture is full of rain - Items 3, 7 and 8 have no time phrase, so children may write is or are instead of was/were
