Before you begin

Teaching guide

What children will practise

Order word tiles into was/were sentences following subject + was/were + place or state + time, e.g. The toys were on the table yesterday.

What's in the worksheet

10 questions, 20 points (Part A, 2 points each) - 4-5 tiles per item, e.g. yesterday / happy / He / was / at the party and the table / The toys / were / on / yesterday - The was or were tile is supplied, so the task is about word order, not choosing the verb - Item 1 needs happy, at the party and yesterday in the right sequence - A separate answer key gives e.g. He was happy at the party yesterday. and It was in the garden yesterday.

How to use it in class

Use after the choose and fill-in was/were sheets. Allow about 10-15 minutes. - The tile colours help: subjects are pink, was/were green and time phrases yellow, so children can see the yellow tile always goes last - After marking, children turn sentences into questions, Was he happy at the party? / Were they in the library?, and ask a partner

Common sticking points

- In item 7 separating on from the table: The toys were the table on yesterday. - In item 1 putting at the party before happy: He was at the party happy yesterday. - Putting was/were first, as in a question (Were they in the library yesterday), when a statement is needed - In item 10 It refers to the dog in the picture, which some children will not connect
