What children will practise

Work out the verb from the picture and write its irregular past form in the sentence, e.g. My dad ___ me a story. (told) and The baby ___ up early. (woke), with no verbs supplied.

What's in the worksheet

10 questions, 20 points (Part A, 2 points each) - Ten pictures, each with a sentence missing its verb, e.g. Yesterday, I ___ to school. and He ___ his keys. - No word bank and no base verbs; children decide the verb from the picture - Key answers: went, ate, told, drew, caught, won, sang, found, saw, woke - A separate answer key shows each answer under its picture

How to use it in class

Use after the choose-the-sentence sheet on the same topic, once these new irregular verbs have been met. Allow about 15 minutes. - No verbs are given, so for less confident classes put the base forms go, eat, tell, draw, catch, win, sing, find, see, wake on the board in random order - After marking, play a pairs game matching base and past cards for these ten verbs, then have children write three sentences about their own yesterday

Common sticking points

- Adding -ed to irregular verbs: catched, drawed, singed, finded, waked - Items 3-10 have no time phrase, so children may write the present, e.g. The girl sings a song., which is grammatical; stress that the whole sheet is about the past - In item 4 the girl holds a paintbrush, so painted (a regular verb) is likely; item 2 may get had and item 3 read instead of the key's words - Confusing sang with sung, or won with win
