Before you begin

Teaching guide

What children will practise

Order word tiles into past sentences following subject + irregular past verb + object + place or time, e.g. We saw a bird in the tree., using the same verbs as the fill-in sheet.

What's in the worksheet

10 questions, 20 points (Part A, 2 points each) - Tiles hold phrases, e.g. a beautiful picture / drew / She and in the tree / saw / We / a bird - Item 1 has five tiles (school / went / I / to / yesterday); items 4-8 have only three - Verbs: went, ate, told, drew, caught, won, sang, found, saw, woke up - A separate answer key gives sentences such as My dad told me a story. and The baby woke up early.

How to use it in class

Use as the third sheet of the topic, after the choose and fill-in sheets. Allow about 10-15 minutes. - Have children find the yellow verb tile first, put the subject before it and the rest after, and remind them to add the capital and full stop themselves, as the tiles have none - Fast finishers can move yesterday or last night to the front (Last night, we ate pizza.) and compare the two versions

Common sticking points

- In item 1 building I went school to yesterday., with to in the wrong place - In item 3 swapping me and a story: My dad told a story me. - In item 2 the we tile is lower case, so children may not capitalise it at the start, and full stops are often missing throughout - In item 10 woke up is one tile, but children may still put early before it
