Teaching guide

What children will practise

Look at the picture and write the regular past verb in the gap, e.g. They ___ TV last night. (watched), working out the verb from the picture and spelling the -ed ending correctly.

What's in the worksheet

10 questions, 20 points (Part A, 2 points each) - The same pictures and sentences as the choose sheet, e.g. She ___ at the party last night. and We ___ Grandma last Sunday. - No word bank and no base verbs given - Key answers: played, danced, watched, cooked, jumped, cleaned, visited, washed, painted, climbed - A separate answer key writes each full sentence under its picture

How to use it in class

Use after the choose sheet on the same topic. Allow about 10-15 minutes. - The sentences are the same, so children who just did the choose sheet will remember the answers; leave a day between them if you want a real check - After marking, have children sort the ten answers by their ending sound, /t/, /d/ or /id/, and read each group aloud

Common sticking points

- Spelling danced as danceed or dancd, not knowing that verbs ending in e just add -d - Items 5, 8 and 10 have no time phrase, so children may write jumps, washes or climbs, which are grammatical - Leaving the base form without -ed: They watch TV last night. - In item 1 writing kicked rather than played, following the picture of a kick
