Before you begin

Teaching guide

What children will practise

Order 3-4 word tiles into past sentences with regular -ed verbs, placing the time phrase yesterday, last night or last Sunday at the end.

What's in the worksheet

10 questions, 20 points (Part A, 2 points each) - Tiles hold phrases, e.g. at the party / danced / last night / She and over the fence / The dog / jumped - Items 5, 8 and 10 have only three tiles and no time phrase; the rest have four - The same sentences as the choose and fill-in sheets, e.g. I cleaned my room yesterday. - A separate answer key writes the full sentence under each picture

How to use it in class

Use as the final sheet of the regular past set. Allow about 10 minutes. - Item 2 has both at the party and last night, so agree the rule first: place before time - Suits slower writers, as the tiles are large and there are only three or four; after marking, children swap in their own time phrase and read the new sentence to a partner, e.g. I cleaned my room this morning.

Common sticking points

- In item 2 putting last night before at the party: She danced last night at the party. - In items 1 and 9 putting yesterday after the subject or verb, as in He yesterday played soccer. - Missing the full stop, since none of the tiles carries one - In item 7 swapping Grandma and We: Grandma visited We last Sunday.
