Teaching guide

What children will practise

Order 3-4 word cards into a short sentence, pronoun + am/is/are + the rest, then pick the correct sentence from three, spotting wrong pairs such as She am and We is.

What's in the worksheet

12 questions, 20 points - Section A: build 8 sentences (16 points), e.g. student / I / am / a and kind / You / are - Some noun cards already include the article, e.g. a teacher, a cat, a dog - Section B: choose the best sentence for 4 items (4 points); distractors include They are a cat., We is a cat., He is friends. and She am a student. - A separate answer key is included

How to use it in class

Use as the third P1-3 pronoun sheet, after the circle-the-picture and fill-in sheets. Allow about 15 minutes. - Tell children the capitalised card (I, She, It, They, He, We, You) always goes first, and that they add the full stop when writing - After marking, read the Section B distractors aloud and correct them together, e.g. We is a cat. becomes It is a cat.

Common sticking points

- In Section B item 4 choosing She am a student., remembering I am but not checking the subject - In Section B item 3 choosing We are friends., which is grammatical; the key gives They - In Section A item 1 misplacing a, as in I am student a., since this is the only item with a separate a card - Leaving off the full stop when copying onto the line
