Before you begin
Read the four-panel story The Rainy Day Surprise and answer What, Where, Who, When and How questions from the pictures and short captions.
10 questions, 20 points - A four-panel story: Nita sees rain, puts on a yellow raincoat and red boots, finds a small bird under a bench, and with Mum puts it in a dry box; when the rain stops, it flies away - Ten three-option questions, e.g. Where is the bird? (tree / roof / under a bench) and When does the bird fly away? (at night / when rain stops / at breakfast) - Item 8, How does Nita feel?, can only be answered from her face, as the captions do not say - A separate key boxes each answer in green with a tick
Use in a reading or weather unit. Allow about 15-20 minutes. - Before reading the captions, ask children to look at all four panels and tell what happens, in Thai or English, then read the captions together - After marking, cover the captions and have children retell the story panel by panel, or draw a fifth panel showing where the bird goes
- Item 4 Who finds the bird?: choosing Mum because she appears in panel 4, though Nita finds it alone in panel 3 - Item 7: choosing at night because panel 1 looks dark, without reading When the rain stops in panel 4 - Item 6: choosing Dad or a friend after missing With Mum in the caption - Item 9: mixing up the raincoat and boot colours (yellow raincoat, red boots)
