Before you begin
Read the four-panel story The Sandcastle Map and decide whether each statement is true or false by checking it against the pictures and captions.
10 statements, 20 points - A four-panel story: Noah and Ava find a map on the beach, follow it past a blue boat, their dog digs near a sandcastle, and they find a shiny shell and share it with Mum - Circle True or False for statements such as They find a book., A cat digs near the sandcastle., They keep the shell a secret. and The story happens in snow. - Six are true (1, 3, 4, 6, 7, 9) and four are false (2, 5, 8, 10) - A separate key ticks the answer circle in green
Use after the multiple-choice picture story, as here children must judge each statement themselves. Allow about 15 minutes. - Before starting, call out map, boat, dog, sandcastle, shell and Mum and have children point to each in the panels - After marking, ask children to rewrite the four false statements so they become true, e.g. They find a map. / A dog digs near the sandcastle.
- Item 2 They find a book.: answering True because the open map in panel 1 looks a little like a book - Item 5: answering True because digs near the sandcastle matches the caption, without noticing dog has become cat - Item 8: guessing because secret is an unfamiliar word - Item 10: children who do not know snow may answer True, thinking of the pale sand
