Before you begin

Teaching guide

What children will practise

Order 4-5 word tiles into a sentence about ownership that starts with This, That, These or The and ends with a possessive pronoun, e.g. These books are ours.

What's in the worksheet

10 questions, 20 points (2 points each) - Tiles are scrambled beside each picture, e.g. backpack / mine. / This / is and red / hers. / ball / That / is - Items 7, 8 and 10 have five tiles because of a two-word noun or an adjective (teddy bear, red ball, treasure map) - Pronouns used: mine, his, hers, ours, theirs and yours - A separate answer key gives sentences such as The kite is theirs. and This camera is yours.

How to use it in class

Use to close the unit after the choose and fill-in sheets. Allow about 10-15 minutes. - Every sentence follows one frame, opener + object + is/are + pronoun, so have children find the capitalised tile and the tile with the full stop first - After marking, children turn a sentence into a question, e.g. Is this backpack yours?, and ask a partner about real things in the room

Common sticking points

- In items 7, 8 and 10 splitting the noun phrase, e.g. The teddy is mine bear., or putting red after ball - In items 4 and 9 the verb is are, but some children copy is because every other sentence uses it - Putting the pronoun before the noun, as in This mine backpack is., by analogy with my backpack - Leaving off the full stop when copying onto the line
