Order word cards into The ... is + preposition + the ... sentences that match the picture, deciding correctly which thing is the subject and which is the reference point.

What's in the worksheet

10 items, 20 points - Four word cards per item, all in lower case, e.g. the chair / the ball / is / under - Prepositions: under (twice), in (twice), on, behind, next to, above, between, in front of - Sample answers: The ball is under the chair., The cat is behind the curtain., The doll is between the blocks., The dog is in front of the sofa. - A separate key writes each full sentence with a capital letter and full stop

How to use it in class

Use at the end of the prepositions unit, after the circle and fill-in sheets. Allow about 15-20 minutes. - Before starting, ask What is in the picture? Where is it? so children find the subject of each item before ordering the cards - Tell children the cards have no capital letters or full stops, so they must add them when writing. After marking, pairs place classroom objects and write new sentences on the same model

Common sticking points

- Swapping the subject and reference point: The chair is under the ball. or The box is in the teddy bear. - Copying the cards without capitalising The or adding a full stop, since neither is on the cards - Starting with the preposition in card order: Under the chair the ball is. - In item 10 the pencil lies below and in front of the notebook rather than beneath it, so under may puzzle children
