Teaching guide

What children will practise

Arrange three or four word cards into a Present Simple sentence of the pattern subject + verb + object + place or time phrase, then write it out in full in the box.

What's in the worksheet

10 items, 20 points - The cards are chunks rather than single words, e.g. her teeth / brushes / Lily / every night - Items 4 and 6 have only three cards: Birds / in the sky / fly and on the bed / sleeps / The cat - Key sentences include My mum reads a story to me. / I paint pictures on Saturday. / The train leaves at 8 o'clock. - A separate answer key writes each full sentence, with its full stop, in the answer box

How to use it in class

Use as the final sheet of the P1-3 Present Simple set, after the circle and fill-in sheets. Allow about 15 minutes. - Nearly all the sentences repeat the fill-in sheet, so treat it as consolidation rather than a fresh assessment - After marking, children swap the time phrase for one of their own, e.g. I paint pictures on Sunday., and read it to a partner

Common sticking points

- Putting the time phrase first or after the subject, e.g. Lily every night brushes her teeth. - Item 3: building My mum reads to me a story., since to me and a story seem interchangeable - Leaving off the full stop, as no card carries one - Copying every card but dropping the s on brushes, reads or leaves
