Teaching guide

What children will practise

Pick a verb from three printed forms and write it into a Present Simple sentence so it agrees with the subject, including special spellings such as brushes and the distractor flies.

What's in the worksheet

10 items, 20 points - Routine sentences such as Lily ___ her teeth every night. / Birds ___ in the sky. / The train ___ at 8 o'clock. - Three forms are printed under each item, e.g. fly / flies / flying and leave / leaves / leaving - Six answers take -s/-es (brushes, reads, eats, sleeps, cooks, leaves) and four the base form (They play, Birds fly, I paint, We learn) - A separate answer key writes the word in the gap and ticks the option

How to use it in class

Use after the circle-the-answer sheet on the same topic, since here children write the word themselves. Allow about 10-15 minutes. - Before starting, point out that each item has two lines and agree that the answer goes in the gap in the sentence - Item 10, The train leaves at 8 o'clock., opens a short talk about timetables; children then say when their own school bus or bus leaves

Common sticking points

- Item 4, Birds ___: picking flies because it looks like the -s form, though the subject is plural - Item 10, The train: picking leave, not seeing that a thing takes -s like he/she/it - Item 3, My mum: picking read because the subject is two words, missing that it is one person - Miscopying the word, e.g. brushs or leafs
