Teaching guide

What children will practise

Work out the verb from each picture and write it in the Present Simple or Present Continuous to fit the time words in the sentence, such as now, every Monday or at night.

What's in the worksheet

10 items, 2 points each, 20 points in total - No verbs are printed, so children name the action from the picture, e.g. He ___ soccer every Monday. / The bird ___ now. / Dad ___ to work every day. - Five Present Simple answers: plays, sleeps, cooks, watch and drives - Five Present Continuous answers: is drinking, are reading, is flying, am drawing and is eating - A separate answer key writes the answers in red in the sentences

How to use it in class

Use after the choose-the-sentence sheet on the same topic. Allow about 15 minutes, since children supply the verb and the correct be form themselves. - Before starting, ask children to name each picture's verb in its base form, e.g. play, drink, sleep, before deciding on the tense - After marking, pairs take turns pointing at a picture and asking What is he doing now? or What does Dad do every day?, answering in full sentences

Common sticking points

- Writing only drinking or flying in the continuous items and leaving out is/am/are - Item 8, I ___ a picture now.: writing is drawing instead of am drawing - Item 7, We ___ TV on Sundays.: writing watches out of habit - Items 3 and 5: using a different verb from the key, such as lies or makes, which is grammatical; agree the marking rule first
