Before you begin

Teaching guide

What children will practise

Order three or four cards, with the verb already in its tense (e.g. plays, is drinking) and a time phrase (every Monday, now), into a sentence, noticing which time phrase goes with which tense.

What's in the worksheet

10 items, 2 points each, 20 points in total - Cards are chunks, e.g. now / milk / is drinking / She and every day / to work / Dad / drives - Items 3, 6 and 10 have three cards; the rest have four - Key sentences include He plays soccer every Monday. / They are reading books now. / I am drawing a picture now. - A separate answer key writes each full sentence in red under the picture

How to use it in class

Use as revision after the choose and fill-in sheets on this topic. Allow about 15 minutes. - The verbs are already in the right tense, so this practises word order more than tense choice; before starting, have children circle the time phrase in each item and say Simple or Continuous - After marking, children swap the time phrase, e.g. now for every day, and change the verb to match: She drinks milk every day.

Common sticking points

- Putting now or every Monday first, e.g. Now she is drinking milk., which is grammatical but not the key's order; agree the marking rule in advance - Item 9: building Dad drives every day to work. because the time card sits first - Items 2 and 4: putting the object last, e.g. She is drinking now milk. - Leaving off the full stop and capital, since no card carries a full stop
