Before you begin

Teaching guide

What children will practise

Read A Clean Park Day, about Class 5's clean-up at Riverside Park, and scan for specific facts (times, places, people, numbers) to answer ten three-option questions.

What's in the worksheet

10 questions, 2 points each, 20 points in total - A ten-sentence text full of facts to keep apart: they met at 8:30, planted three trees at 10:00 and filled six recycling bags - When, Where, What, Who, What time and How many questions, e.g. Who collected plastic bottles? (Nita and Tom / Ms. Lana and Ben / Ben and Mia) - Items 2 and 8 both ask about places and both offer near the playground - The supplied answer key does not match this text, so mark against the passage itself

How to use it in class

Use in a reading-for-information or environment unit. Allow about 20 minutes. - Before reading, have children underline every number and time in the text (8:30, 10:00, three, six), since several questions use them as distractors - After marking, children play the park reporter from the header and give a three-sentence news report on who did what and where

Common sticking points

- Item 6, What time did the class plant trees?: choosing 12:00 because the clock picture points to 12, or 8:30, the meeting time - Items 4 and 5: swapping the pairs Ben and Mia and Nita and Tom - Item 8: choosing near the playground, carried over from item 2, though the trees went beside the pond - Answering from the picture next to each question instead of the text
