Before you begin
Read The Museum Mystery and work out the meaning of ten underlined words, such as enormous, fragile and grateful, from the story and a fresh example sentence.
10 items, 2 points each, 20 points in total - Underlined words: enormous, whisper, ancient, examine, curious, fragile, discover, narrow, silent and grateful - Each item gives a new sentence with a picture, e.g. The alley is narrow., and three meanings (not high / not wide / very wide) - Distractors are often opposites: very small, shout loudly, brand new, very noisy - A separate answer key circles the letter and adds a tick
Use in a P4-6 reading unit to practise guessing meaning from context before reaching for a dictionary. Allow about 15-20 minutes. - Read the story together first, pausing at each underlined word to ask what the surrounding words reveal, e.g. so we don't disturb the other visitors explains whisper - After marking, children pick three words and write sentences about their own school, e.g. The library is silent.
- Item 8, narrow: choosing not high, not separating width from height, though the picture is a narrow alley - Item 6, fragile: choosing very heavy because the clay pot nearly slipped in the story - Item 5, curious: choosing not interested, confusing it with its opposite - Item 10, grateful: choosing bored or angry by guessing from the picture
