Teaching guide

What children will practise

Read the six-sentence text A Day at Greenhill Farm and decide whether ten statements are true or false, catching changed details such as train for bus and Monday for Friday.

What's in the worksheet

10 statements, 20 points - The text: Class 5 go to the farm by bus on Friday, feed the goats, plant vegetable seeds, eat lunch under a big tree and return to school at 2:30 - Five true statements (1, 3, 4, 6, 9) copy the text almost word for word - Five false ones change a single detail: train, Monday, in the cafeteria, flower seeds, before noon - A separate answer key circles True or False with a tick

How to use it in class

Use as a warm-up reading sheet in the reading-for-information unit, since the text is short and its sentences are numbered. Allow about 10-15 minutes. - Before starting, ask children to find the words in the text that answer How, When, Where and What, e.g. by bus, on Friday, under a big tree - After marking, children correct the five false statements, e.g. They travelled by bus in the morning., and say which numbered sentence they used

Common sticking points

- Item 2: answering True because the picture shows a child by a window, as if on a train - Item 8: answering True on spotting planted and seeds, missing flower instead of vegetable - Item 10: before noon needs an inference from 2:30 in the afternoon; some children answer True without comparing - Item 6: hesitating because the clock picture does not show 2:30
