Before you begin
Read the six-sentence story Sam and Mia at the Park and answer When, Who, What colour, Where and What questions by choosing a one-word answer from three.
10 questions, 20 points - The story: Sam and Mia go to the park on Saturday; Sam brings a blue ball, Mia a red kite; they see a duck swimming in the pond, eat sandwiches and go home before dinner - Nine questions are answered directly in the text, e.g. Who brings the blue ball? (Mia / Sam / Duck) - Item 10, How do the children feel?, is not in the text; children read it from the faces in the picture - A separate answer key boxes the answer in green with a tick
Use as the first sheet in the P1-3 short-sentences reading set, once children can read five- or six-word sentences. Allow about 10-15 minutes. - Read the story aloud together, then have children underline the objects and colours (blue ball, red kite), since questions 2-4 depend on them - After marking, children retell the story with two details changed, such as the ball's colour or the day, and a partner spots the changes
- Items 2 and 4: mixing up who brought what, e.g. Mia brings the ball, because the names sit close together - Item 3: answering red, carrying over the kite's colour to the ball - Item 5, Where is the duck?: answering tree because the owl sits in a tree in the picture - Item 9: answering lunch because sandwiches feel like lunch
