Teaching guide

What children will practise

Read short sentences with no picture support and circle the word that makes sense, drawing on everyday knowledge, as in We eat soup with a spoon. and A kitten says meow.

What's in the worksheet

10 items, 20 points - Ten separate sentences, not a story, with no picture for each item - Key: spoon, fly, rainy, board, swim, car, sweet, hear, meow and moon - Distractors come from the same word family as the answer, e.g. hear / see / smell (item 8) and moo / meow / roar (item 9) - A separate answer key boxes the answer in green with a tick

How to use it in class

Use as a mixed-vocabulary review in a P1-3 reading unit. Allow about 10 minutes. - Before starting, read item 1 together with the gap and ask which words fit, which do not, and why - After marking, each child picks one item and writes a new sentence using a distractor, e.g. I use my eyes to see. or A cow says moo.

Common sticking points

- Item 3: choosing cold, since boots are also worn in cold weather, which is reasonable - Item 1: choosing cup because soup can be served in a cup, missing eat ... with - Item 8: choosing see out of habit with I see - Item 9: choosing roar because kittens and tigers are both cats
