Teaching guide

What children will practise

Read Leo and Max, about a boy and his small brown dog, and decide whether ten statements are true or false, spotting changed words such as Sam, night, park, blue and cat.

What's in the worksheet

10 statements, 20 points - A six-sentence story: Leo feeds Max every morning, Max runs in the yard, on Sunday they walk to the pet shop and buy a red ball - Five true (1, 4, 6, 7, 9) and five false (2, 3, 5, 8, 10) - Each false statement changes one word: named Sam, at night, the park, blue, a cat - A separate answer key boxes the answer in green with a tick

How to use it in class

Use after the answer-the-questions sheet in the short-sentences set. Allow about 10 minutes. - Before starting, have children circle the time and place words in the story (each morning, the yard, On Sunday, the pet shop, at home), since most false items change one of these - After marking, children correct the five false statements aloud, e.g. No, the dog is named Max., then say two sentences about a pet of their own

Common sticking points

- Item 2, The dog is named Sam.: answering True without checking the name - Item 5: answering True because Sunday is right, missing park in place of pet shop - Item 8, The ball is blue.: answering True because the header shows a blue water bowl - Item 10, Max is a cat.: answering True because the header also shows a rabbit and an owl
