What children will practise

Read the short story about a helper in the library and use context to work out the meaning of eight words such as borrow, whisper, missing and empty.

What's in the worksheet

8 questions, 20 points - A five-sentence story: Sam visits the library after school, wants to borrow a space book, and Ava helps the librarian find the missing book under a table - Choose A, B or C for the meaning of quiet, borrow, shelf, whisper, missing, search, helpful and empty - Key: 1 C, 2 A, 3 B, 4 C, 5 A, 6 B, 7 C, 8 A - A My New Word box and stars to colour at the bottom are not scored

How to use it in class

Use to practise guessing meaning from context once children have read a few short stories. Allow about 15 minutes. - Before starting, ask children to circle the eight words in the story and read each sentence aloud - After marking, play a mime game with whisper, search and borrow, then have each child write a favourite word in the My New Word box with a short sentence

Common sticking points

- Item 8 Empty: choosing B full of books because shelf and book sit close together in the story, though it is the opposite meaning - Item 2 Borrow: Thai learners often confuse borrow with lend - Picking an option that echoes the story rather than defines the word, e.g. item 3 A a kind person because the librarian is kind
