Before you begin

Teaching guide

What children will practise

Read The Lantern in the Forest and use context to choose the meaning of ten bold words such as curious, mysterious and praised.

What's in the worksheet

10 items, 2 points each, 20 points - An eight-sentence story: Mali follows a glow along a narrow trail, finds a lost puppy beside a broken basket, gives it water and calls a ranger - Bold words: curious, narrow, gentle, mysterious, nervous, brave, discovered, weak, offered and praised - Choose a, b or c. Key: 1 b, 2 c, 3 b, 4 b, 5 a, 6 c, 7 b, 8 a, 9 c, 10 b - A separate key writes the correct meaning in red

How to use it in class

Use after the question and true/false sheets in the story set, to consolidate vocabulary. Allow about 15 minutes. - Before starting, have children read each sentence with a bold word and guess the meaning in Thai before looking at the options - After marking, pair up opposites from the sheet such as narrow / wide, brave / easily scared and weak / strong, and ask each child for two sentences about themselves

Common sticking points

- Item 2 narrow: choosing a very wide, the opposite meaning - Item 6 brave: choosing a easily scared because the previous sentence says Mali felt nervous - Item 5 nervous: choosing b excited, as both are feelings - Item 10 praised: choosing a shouted at when the thumbs-up picture is misread
