Teaching guide

What children will practise

Read Nina and the Baby Otter and decide whether ten statements are true or false, relying on the text rather than the pictures.

What's in the worksheet

10 statements, 2 points each - The story: Nina and her brother Kai find a baby otter tangled in fishing line; Nina calls ranger Ms. Ploy instead of pulling it herself, Kai keeps people back, and they both collect rubbish - Choose True or False for lines such as Nina pulled the line off the otter by herself. and The baby otter swam away from its mother. - Five are true (1, 3, 5, 6, 9) and five false (2, 4, 7, 8, 10) - A separate key writes True or False in red

How to use it in class

Use after the Story Trail question sheet. Allow about 15 minutes. - Before starting, warn children that some small pictures illustrate the false statement, so every answer must be checked against a sentence in the story - After marking, have children correct the false statements, e.g. Nina called the ranger., then discuss what to do if you find an injured animal

Common sticking points

- Item 2: answering True because the picture shows a fox cub in the reeds, though the story is about an otter - Item 4: answering True because the picture shows Nina pulling the line, though the story says instead of trying to pull the line herself - Item 7: confusing swam away from with swam toward its mother - Item 8: answering True because there is rubbish in the picture, missing that the story says helped collect, not left
