What children will practise

Compare three things in each picture and pick the -est superlative from the base, comparative and superlative forms, including heavy to heaviest.

What's in the worksheet

10 items, 2 points each, 20 points - Each item offers three forms of one adjective, e.g. biggest / bigger / big, slowest / slower / slow, heavy / heaviest / heavier - Adjectives: big, tall, fast, slow, strong, heavy, long, sweet, high, and fast again in item 10 - Some items add numbers to compare, such as rocks of 50, 150 and 100 kg and mountains of 1,500, 3,200 and 2,400 m - A separate key writes the answer under each picture

How to use it in class

Use as the first sheet after teaching the + -est. Allow about 10-15 minutes. - Before starting, line up three pupils by height and chant tall, taller, the tallest to separate comparative from superlative - After marking, use the numbers in items 5 and 9 for extra sentences such as Mount Green is the lowest., then move on to the superlatives fill-in sheet

Common sticking points

- Choosing the -er form (bigger, faster, heavier), the distractor in every item, despite the in the sentence - Item 6: picking heavier, or expecting heavyest, without knowing that y changes to i - Items 1 and 2: choosing big or tall because the same word already appears earlier, as in The big elephant is the ___
