Curriculum indicators practised
Before you begin
Write the superlative unaided from each picture, both regular -est forms and heavy to heaviest, with no options given.
10 items, 2 points each, 20 points - Fill the gap with no word bank, e.g. The elephant is the ___ animal., The blue backpack is the ___., Mount Blue is the ___ mountain. - Two items give numbers: backpacks of 6, 3 and 2 kg, mountains of 1500, 2500 and 1800 m - Key answers: biggest, tallest, fastest, slowest, strongest, heaviest, longest, sweetest, highest, fastest - A separate answer key is included
Use after the superlatives choose sheet, once children recognise the -est form. Allow about 15 minutes. - Before starting, have children name the base adjective for each picture aloud (big, tall, fast, slow) before writing the superlative - After marking, ask each child to write three superlative sentences about the class, e.g. Nok is the tallest girl in our class.
- Item 1: writing bigest, not knowing big doubles its final consonant - Item 6: writing heavyest instead of heaviest - Writing the comparative (faster, taller) even though the comes before the gap - Items 1 and 10 may get largest or quickest, which make sense; decide the marking rule in advance
